The Finder returns – or debuts, however you want to look at it – January 12 on Fox, after Bones’ midseason finale, which was awkwardly pushed back until next to serve as a lead-in for the spinoff.

If you can forgive the new show for taking the place of Bones, which goes on hiatus until the spring after January 12, due to Emily Deschanel’s maternity leave, it might actually be worth watching. In the nearly three-minute sneak preview below, the Fox show’s cast re-introduces – or in the case of newcomer Mercedes Masohn as Isabel (replacing Saffron Burrows’ Ike), introduces – their characters.

The show follows Walter Sherman (Geoff Stults) and his unique gift, being able to track things and people no one else can. Leo (Michael Clarke Duncan) is his legal adviser, bodyguard, friend … you name it. Take a look at The Finder below:

The Fox drama “Bones” is testing unfamiliar waters this week — well, at least, unfamiliar shores.

The series about partners Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) began principal photography Saturday in London for this fall’s two-hour season premiere. It’s the first time the series has shot outside Southern California.

The Season Four opener, slated to air at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3 on Fox, has Brennan guest-lecturing at Oxford University and Booth speaking at Scotland Yard when they are asked by local officials to lend their expertise to a high-profile murder investigation involving a young British heiress.

The shooting schedule has the cast and crew in the U.K. for several weeks at locations that include Oxford, the Thames River, Tower Bridge, Lambeth Palace, official residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and throughout the streets of the city. The episode is also aptly titled “Yanks in the U.K.”

As she does most every weekend, Bones star Emily Deschanel is spending her Sunday morning shopping at a Hollywood farmers’ market near her home.

A strict vegan, she has avoided all animal products for 15 years, ever since watching a documentary about the meat industry. Her lifestyle extends to avoiding leather clothing or consuming even honey because “sometimes,” she says, “they kill the bees.” As a result, she is forced to forgo many samples along the route.

But Deschanel’s icy character, forensic anthropologist Temperance “Bones” Brennan, has no problem interacting with freshly butchered bodies on the Fox crime drama. With two episodes remaining in the third season (Mondays, 8 p.m. ET/PT), Deschanel hints that viewers will soon learn the shocking identity of cannibalistic serial killer Gormogon’s apprentice.

She and her on-screen crime-solving partner, David Boreanaz (FBI Agent Booth), were named producers on the show this season, which has upped their creative input.

“David had it in his contract, and I think they wanted to do something to make me feel equal with him, which is nice,” she explains. “We’re definitely more involved in the show and where it goes … if there are story lines or plot points we feel aren’t right for the characters.”

But Deschanel insists she had nothing to do with Monday’s episode, which finds her providing some comic relief. Former American Idol finalists Ace Young and Brandon Rogers guest-star in a story line that culminates with Deschanel singing a Cyndi Lauper standard. Though she can carry a tune, the actress, 31, hasn’t performed much before an audience since grade-school productions of The Mikado and Into the Woods.

That playful side is more akin to her own personality, and the market experience does bring out her inner child.

Realizing she has left her environmentally friendly shopping bag in her car, she makes a mad dash back and returns. Out of breath, she apologizes for taking so long, having run into a few friends along the way.

“I love the atmosphere here,” Deschanel says, filling her bag with avocados. “I make a good guacamole, if I do say so myself.”

At the end of one street, she spots a friend selling some Play-Doh-like Eco-Dough and picks up a complete set for a friend’s child.

Reaching her favorite vegan soul food stand, she orders a to-go plate of veggie pot roast, greens, cornbread and black-eyed peas that she will take home to the duplex she shares with her vegetarian kid sister, Zooey, 28, also an actress (Elf).

Later in the afternoon, she and her boyfriend are taking a Jewish food cooking class. She declines to name her beau, explaining: “The last time I talked about my (ex) boyfriend, we had broken up by the time the article came out.”

She’s far more comfortable discussing her unique relationship with Boreanaz. “We drive each other crazy,” she says. “I’m such a nosy person that I need to get in there when he’s having a conversation with the director. But we laugh about it.”

He’s “like a kid,” she says. “He’ll take down his pants and moon people.” And, “He’ll try to kiss me and stuff, and I’ll be like, ‘Uhhhh!’ ”

Having a co-worker try to kiss you? For Deschanel, that’s worse than a bloody body any day.

Ausiello: Probably not this season. But next season? You betcha. Exec producer Hart Hansen confirms that the two Bs will “definitely” lock lips for real sometime in Season 4. “I figure, we’re going into [our fourth season],” he says, “and we’ve had the fake kiss. So we need to go to the next step.”

Question: You can’t just leave me hanging as to why Bones is looking for a new full-time forensic anthropologist. Who’s leaving? — Katie
Ausiello: Actually, I just double-checked the Ask Ausiello rulebook, and I can leave you hanging. Not only that, but I can even heighten your anxiety if I want. Which reminds me: Did I tell you about the two deaths coming up? One of them occurs in the May 12 episode, the other in the May 19 season finale.

Ausiello: I’m trying to think of something that’s bigger than the kiss and the two deaths I just told you about. Oh, here’s something: There’s a very good chance that the fourth-season premiere will air on Aug. 26 and be two hours long. And that’s not the best part. No, the best part is waiting for you in this week’s Ausiello Report vodcast!

David Boreanaz and “Bones” creator Hart Hanson report that the series has just received its season 4 renewal for 20 episodes — with the popular Fox network show looking likely to location abroad next season. “Some of the contenders are Spain, Monaco, Italy — it just depends on how it gets put together,” Hanson says of the show, which also stars Emily Deschanel.

First, however, there’s season 3 to complete. “Bones” heads back into its post-WGA-strike production Tuesday (March 25) to shoot six more episodes for the current season — and will return to the air with fresh episodes April 14.
